Misconceptions during a job hunt can lead to grave mistakes and hinder your job search. It is important to understand the process involved in a job hunt and diligently strive towards your goal. Many people harbor certain myths about job-hunting. We take a look at some of them here.

Job Hunting Myths

-A Cover Letter Is Not Important: A cover letter informs an employer about your qualifications for the position you are applying for. The cover letter is also known as the letter of introduction or letter of application. A resume without a cover letter is considered incomplete.

-Job Search Right After College Is Easy: Identifying the right job immediately after college is not an easy process. The job you eventually land is greatly influenced by the your qualifications, skills and experience. While a few graduates do get jobs right away, many take a while before being considered for a suitable position in a decent company.

-A Well-Designed Resume Improves A Person’s Chances Of Getting Placed: Generally, flashy resumes don’t serve any good purpose. Additionally, it is not a good idea to send such resumes via email. Most employers do not even open very flashy resumes for fear of a virus. Job seekers should keep at least two copies of the resume ready at all times. One set should be very simple, with no special characters or bullets. This simple resume should be emailed to the employer. The other set should be well designed, with keywords highlighted in bold font. This resume should be carried with you to the interview.

-Frequent Job Hopping Is Negative: This is a common myth among job seekers. Some very quick job shifts, within a year, are not always well received. However, job-hopping is sometimes considered to be an opportunity to acquire new skills. Employers believe that one company cannot provide job progression for very long and individuals are sure to move on for growth. Every employer always looks for special ability in the employee to empower the business’s existent operations.

-Registering At Various Job Sites On The Internet Is Beneficial: Job sites online provide options and initial assistance. These job sites do not guarantee placement. Registering is fine, but constant action on your part is very essential. You must keep searching other avenues as well and explore every opportunity that comes your way.

-Better Qualifications Get A Better Job: This is perhaps the greatest misconception among job seekers. It is not always the most qualified person who is hired. Often, a person with the minimum qualifications and good communication skills is the one who gets placed faster. Employers seek employees who can serve the company loyally and use their skills to improve business returns.

Transferable skills are skills acquired on the job or through an activity. They can prove useful during a job shift. A job seeker must always describe his transferable skills in his resume, the cover letter and during the interview. The myths about job-hunting that haunt job seekers only add to the tension of securing a good position within a particular time frame. They do nothing more than hold you back from forging ahead and giving an interview your best shot.

Okay here’s the deal. I had a contract job for the summer. I started job hunting a month before my other job was over. That was August. It’s not October, I have put out 175 resumes and have had only 6 interviews (not hugely uncommon in my area since every 6 months there are another 800 layoffs between the John Deere and the GM plants)
- I start a part time seasonal job tomorrow but it won’t pay the bills.
- I am on every job hunting site there is, I check them all daily.
- I hit the pavement twice a week
- My resume and cover letter have been reviewed by many professionals and is perfected (I quote that because I know that as perfect as it is, there is still a subjective factor to what people like when they look at it)
- I don’t apply for jobs I am not qualified for
- My resume and cover letter are personally tailored to EVERY company I apply to.
- I always look professional and act professional. (I would assume that would go without saying but just in case I thought I’d add it)

So, what am I not doing right? ANY suggestions please?
I already said I have a good resume. I asked what ELSE I was missing.
Whoops, didn’t mean to hit submit yet.
I meant to add, I have 2 different resumes. I have a functional and a skills resume. I use different ones for different positions. I also take 5 - 10 minutes to adjust any information that should be highlighted more to each position I apply for.
plEASE CONTACT A job center thEn apply if YOu ArE satisfied. YOu may mentally prepare for facing AN interview then YOu go. Don’t be over smart. Be gentle.
If you want to give me a good answer. spell it right!
i think u will be success.
I don’t live in the US. I worked for my government this summer. Government jobs are HORRID! Never again.

The ultimate target of good education is to ensure a good job. This is instilled into us from the early stages of our lives. We know that without a good education it will be difficult, if not impossible, to move forward in life. Those responsible to guide and mentor us in all our formative years teach us to study hard and succeed in academics so that when we grow up we are able to land prestigious and well-paying jobs.

When Does The Job Hunt Begin?

What is the level of education that one needs to acquire before seeking a job? Should it be after graduating from high school or is a college degree essential before seeking employment?

Looking at some of the statistics that are pertinent to the issue, we find that less than 43 percent of students complete high school - out of which only about half enroll in college. This data pertains to the year 2003 and 2004 as reported by the National Center for Education.

Many Jobseekers Do Not Possess a College Degree

Considering the data above, it becomes apparent that a big portion of job hunters do not have a college degree. Therefore, the fact is that a good job can be had without a college degree.

When a candidate has the knowledge, skills and the right attitude and drive to excel, there is no dearth of opportunities to land good jobs.

What Is A Good Job?

Usually, the answer most people would give is that a good job is one that carries a fat salary and moves you high into the social bracket. However, this is not the right answer for describing a “good job”. In reality, a good job is one that you find pleasure and delight in going to each working day of your life.

Applying these standards, numerous jobseekers may be holding “good jobs”. The inevitable result is dissatisfied individuals who harbor a deep sense of disillusionment, even if they are able to get good salaries.

In reality, job satisfaction comes from doing a job that is in line with your passion in life, something you seriously believe in - and not the salary that it gets you. Therefore, the main criteria in selecting a job should be looking at what you enjoy doing and what you make in terms of money, rather than going for something that pays well and trying to force yourself into liking it.

The Advantage of College Education

The decision to go through college is a personal one - and honestly speaking, college education does open up avenues of high-end, knowledge-based employment, and is certainly desirable for anyone seeking to be intellectually empowered.

The real point here is that even without a college degree, there are plenty of jobs available that can allow a person to pursue a very fulfilling and satisfying career.

Deciding What You Want To Do

With so much competition and a plethora of jobs on the scene, it becomes very difficult to decide which way to go if you have not devoted time from your early years towards selecting the career you would like to pursue.

If you find this difficult, then you should complete a career assessment to determine what careers would fit with your personal characteristics and motivations. An employment counselor can also be of great help.

One of the most dramatic changes in the 21st Century job market is in the way employers consider you when they first lay eyes on you.

For example, if you think that it’s your resume that will get you a job, you’re in for a long, LONG job search!

Or if you’re intent on proving yourself based on your work history . . . what you used to do for someone else . . . get ready for disappointment and rejection.

And if your confidence is based on your ability to passively answer all the questions an interviewer throws at you, you already lost.

Today’s employers are looking for people with energy. And they pick up on your energy before they even formally meet you. Do you exhibit the energy employers are looking for?

Energetic people exude vigor, enthusiasm and drive. They want and need to be active. Employers can sense this quality in a person almost as soon as they enter the room. They have a spring in their step and a drive that puts a sparkle in their eyes.

All this occurs even before you open your mouth. We know from experience that an employer or interviewer will make a go/no-go decision about you in a matter of seconds all based on the sense of energy you communicate when they first lay eyes on you.

So, if you are not this type of person, it would be wise to practice how to look and act energetically so that you can make a good first impression. It really makes a big difference because job opportunities are literally won or lost depending on how you enter a room.

Being aware of employers’ expectations is critical to your job search success. The old-fashioned job hunting techniques focused all the attention on YOU . . . your work history, your past accomplishments, your academic and other credentials, your qualifications, your objectives.

But all that’s changed. Today employers expect you to know what THEIR needs are and how you can fill them going forward. Displaying energy is the first step.

I’ve been working at target in brooklyn for 10 months, and ive seen favoritism between managers and their brown nosers. I’m paid 7.25 an hour, and I have to deal with 30% of the populous being irately rude with me although i try to maintain my professionalism in my department, I specifically requested to be changed to a different department prior to an incident and was told theyll see what they can do. I was pressured to sign off on a final notice for the incident however the persons present and issueing the written notice were not the correct managers. I felt like i was railroaded into write ups by managers because I dont know whom to speak with…..I have begun severe job hunting to remove myself form this depressive enviroment any suggestions besides finding a better job ?
The one manager above the current one that oversees my department is useing said tactics to have a glass ceiling effect. We do have a humkan resource manager whom is new However id do feel that there is a said practice of nameing names that violates their private policy act…
Is there a way to remain anonnymous and see if an action can be done without stirring to much trouble…

You’re reading this because you want to get ahead. And you recognize that solid job hunt advice can produce job search success. And you know that a quality career change can be seriously enhanced by quality job hunt advice.

Then, doesn’t it make sense to do it the right way?

What if I told you that most folks in today’s complex marketplace are doing it backward? As a result they’re taking months to accomplish what could be done successfully in a matter of days. To do right by your job search success you need to be guided by the ultimate job hunt advice–three golden rules. Master them and you virtually guarantee your job search success!

Golden Rule #1: No employer will be interested in you if he/she can’t be convinced that you can make a real contribution to bottom line or that you can make the employer’s job easier. If you fail to communicate that in your interviews, resume and written or spoken messages . . . you’re OUT!

The burden is on you to prove you can make a difference. That means you have to research what the organization’s goals are and specifically what the hiring decision-maker is looking for. And then be prepared to present specific contributions.

If you think that somehow an employer will figure out what you can do by reading between the lines of your resume or second-guessing your interview presentation . . . well, they don’t have the time or interest to do that. Besides, if you can’t show how you bring value, there’s someone else right behind you who can.

Golden Rule #2: You are in charge of your job search success . . . and only you! If you leave your job search up to chance by using passive, uninvolved strategies you just LOST!

For example, hoping that posting your resume to a half dozen job search website like Monster or HotJobs will get you the job you deserve is worse than wishful thinking. It’s delusion! The same applies to answering endless ads or expecting recruiters or agencies to handle everything for you.

Golden Rule # 3: The most valuable asset you have that can guarantee you a speedy and lucrative job search are your CONTACTS. These are people you already know starting with relatives, friends, neighbors, religious leaders, business associates and customers, people you buy things from (like insurance, financial services, contractors, etc.). However, you can’t turn them off by asking them to find you a job. You need to have a carefully-crafted script that will turn them into career partners.

In short, you need a plan–some powerful job hunt advice–a blueprint that can walk you through the process step-by-step. When you follow a system you can be entertaining a job offer is as little as 14 days!

I work in the legal field (I am not an attorney) I had several jobs in 3 law offices. My first job I resigned in 9 months of my employment. My second job I resigned in 8-9 months and I have 7 months at my current job . My resume speaks for itself, I have good experience but shows that I am not stable at one job. I really want to find a good firm to work for and make it a career starting off as an entry level paralegal. I am a hardworker and a quick learner. I am going to school to get certified as a paralegal. I am not happy at my current job because I over qualify for the position I took which is a receptionist. Its fustrating for me because I feel I can do more. I dont know if by looking now I am just wasting my time, plus this job doesnt have good benefits and there is favoritism at the office but not with me. I really need some advice I know employers would toss my resume if I were to start job hunting, I was thinking on waiting till January of 2007. What can I do to fix my resume?
