When starting the job search it is important to have direction and purpose. A lot of people do not know what they love or have a passion for, let alone take the time to reflect upon what this may be. Proceeding with your job hunt becomes much easier when you know where you want to go. Once you have established a clear picture of what it is that you want you can start to take the necessary steps toward attaining this career goal. Below are 3 useful tips that will help you discover what it is that you love, develop a plan of action and finally make it a reality.
1) Self-Assessment: Obtaining a greater understanding of yourself will help you reveal which job industry you would be right for you. Ask yourself, what is the thing I love doing most in this world? What is it that I know I am really good at? What is it that other people have told me I am good at? Where do I want to be 10 years from now? Taking the time to think about and answer these questions will serve as a compass in your job search and point you in the right direction. Writing down your answers to these questions will help you develop of more vivid picture of exactly what you want to do and where you want to be. Once you have compiled a list of activities try to see if any correlate with something that you are already good at doing. You don’t need to decide on only one career or industry just yet- make a list of no more than 5 that you could honestly see yourself doing and enjoying!
2) Now that we have our list of potential careers we must develop a plan of action. Coming up with the ideas is less than half the battle. Taking actionable steps toward achieving your goal is much more labor intensive and will require hard work and determination. Write a personalized plan for each of your potential career choices. Start by defining the industry that you would be working within. Obtain more information about this industry and gain an understanding of how it operates. Identify particular job positions within the industry and try to obtain knowledge about each position. Create another section focused upon how you plan to network with people holding these positions. Will you attend conferences, tap into vast social media networks, go to seminars? Develop another section that outlines exactly how you will gain experience within the industry. Are you willing to work an unpaid internship? Would you accept the job at the bottom of the ladder to be exposed to the industry? These questions must all be answered, preferably in a step by step process format. The more extensive your plan, the easier it will be for you to achieve your goal.
3) Once you have developed your plan, although the plan will never be complete as you will constantly change it, it is time to implement it. Wake up an hour earlier than you normally do every morning. Use at a very minimum that extra hour of your day to follow the previously outlined steps of your plan. Remember that it is up to you, and you alone, to achieve these goals. If you want it badly enough and work hard enough, your vision will become a reality. Remember, idleness will not be rewarded. Eliminate all unnecessary activities that do not help you attain what it is that you truly desire.
